THE TREMITI ISLANDS

Setting off from Rodi Garganico, you can enjoy a nice trip to the Tremiti Islands

In order to reach the nearby Tremiti Islands, you only have to take the ferry from the marina in Rodi Garganico, only a stone’s throw away from the Stella del Sud Camping Village.

THE TREMITI ISLAND ARCHIPELAGO

The Tremiti Islands form a small archipelago in the Adriatic Sea; they are situated just above the Gargano promontory. They include:

  • San Nicola (St. Nicholas), where there is also the town hall
  • San Domino, the largest island which is most developed for tourism thanks to its sandy beach
  • Capraia, which is uninhabited
  • Pianosa, which consists of uninhabited rocky plains
  • Cretaccio, a clay-rich rock close to the San Domino and San Nicola

WHAT YOU CAN SEE ON THE TREMITI ISLANDS

Apart from the breathtaking beauty of the Islands, the colours of the sea which laps against them, an interesting destination for a trip to the Tremiti Islands could be the Abbey-Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Mare, one of the main points of interest.

According to a legend, the Abbey was even built by a hermit during the 3rd century A.D. after having witnessed an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and after having discovered treasure on the island.

Its period of greatest splendour, in any case, experienced by the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare was around the 9th century when it was an important Benedictine convent, when it was directly under the administration of Montecassino Abbey.

Therefore, take advantage of the fact that Rodi Garganico is so close to the Tremiti Islands in order to visit them during your next holiday at the Stella del Sud Camping Village!
